Read: Proverbs 23:1-18
There is an English saying which says, “The best things in life are free.” There is a lot of truth to that. Many people believe that the best things in life are expensive or very exclusive. In fact, the truth is that the best things in life are not things. The value of faith, family and friends points us to the fact that the most important things in life are connected with God and people.
Solomon, the great and wise king, was well qualified to speak about material things because he “surpassed all the kings of the earth in riches and wisdom” (1 Kings 10:23). And what was his advice? “Do not overwork to be rich; because of your own understanding, cease! Will you set your eyes on that which is not? For riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away like an eagle toward heaven” (Prov. 23:4-5). His recommendation was, “Apply your heart to instruction, and your ears to words of knowledge… For surely there is a hereafter,
and your hope will not be cut off” (Prov. 23:12,18).
The truly best things in life are the eternal riches that come from the goodness and grace of God in Jesus Christ. No wonder Paul the apostle wrote, “…the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints…” (Eph. 1:18). Our greatest riches are the riches we have in Christ.
