JUDGES 6:11-12 “Now the Angel of the Lord came and sat under the terebinth tree which was in Ophrah, which belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, while his son Gideon threshed wheat in the winepress, in order to hide it from the Midianites. And the Angel of the Lord appeared to him, and said to him, “The Lord is with you, you mighty man of valor!” (NKJV)
The book of Judges shows the unfaithfulness of Israel who abandoned God and went after false gods in spite of experiencing all the wondrous deeds He had done for them; it is also a book which shows God’s faithfulness when each time He delivers Israel from oppression by raising judges. Gideon was one such judge. When we hear the term judge or leader we get a picture of a strong, fearless and courageous man. But, Gideon was far from such a person. We can see Gideon as a scared and timid person who was grinding wheat in the winepress and not in the out because he feared the Midianites. He feared that if the Midianites saw him they would take away his wheat and kill him.
But, at the same time we see the Angel of the Lord addressing Gideon as a completely different person. He calls Gideon as a mighty man of valor or in other translations as a mighty warrior. Gideon as this point in time was no where closer to being a mighty warrior or even a warrior for he didn’t have any experience of warfare, but, still the Angel of the Lord addresses him as a mighty warrior. And indeed later on we see Gideon turning into a mighty warrior as was described by the Angel of the Lord.
Today you might feel like Gideon, as a timid and fearful person, the world might call you all kinds of names, the world might call you useless, loser, failure, sinner, good-for-nothing… etc. But, let me remind you that you are not what the world tells you are, you are what God tells you are. God calls you victorious, God calls you His child, God calls you righteous, God calls you His treasured possession, God calls you His beloved…etc.
Don’t be concerned about what the world might call you, keep your eyes fixed on what God calls you and be assured that He calls you only good names and whatever God calls that is what you are and that is what you will always be.
