Proverbs 15:22 – “Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed.”
Man is a social being. We can function well by getting the counsel of wise and experienced people in our community. For the lack of proper guidance, a nation fails; but victory is obtained through abundance of counsellors (Prov. 11:14). The Prime Minister of a country chooses his cabinet members wisely based on their experience in governing the country. Moses had the huge task of going to the Promised Land with vast population of people and cattle. If there were any disputes, he had to listen and give the right judgement from God patiently from morning till evening. Based on Moses’ father-in-law Jethro’s suggestion, he appointed able rulers to judge over people in thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens in all seasons and only hard cases were brought to Moses (Ex. 18:22). Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed (Prov. 15:22).
King Rehoboam rejected the advice of the elders who served in the time of his father King Solomon and listened to the counsel of young men who had grown up with him. As a result, Israelites rebelled against King Rehoboam for making their burden more severe than king Solomon (1 Kings 12).
We must be wise in getting the counsel from wise people. The Bible says that he that walks with a wise man will be wiser (Prov. 13:20). A wise woman is a crown of her husband (Prov. 12:4), her wisdom helps in building her home (Prov. 14:1). God grants wisdom, knowledge and happiness to the person who pleases him (Eccl. 2:26). Fear of God is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction (Prov. 1:7). God is our wonderful counsellor (Isa. 9:6) and is willing to generously grant wisdom to anyone who lacks it and comes to Him (Jas. 1:5). Are you willing to listen to His counsel?
