GENESIS 1:26 “Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness…” (NKJV)
When God made man, He declared something very special about human beings which is not the same of any other created beings. Human beings are unique among all of God’s creations because we are created in God’s own image. No other creature is made in God’s image, not even the angels. Only we bear the image of God and this makes us unique and precious above all else that God has made.
What does created in God’s image mean? Some say that we share capacities with God that other created things on earth do not share. We share with Him a capacity for abstract thought, or a moral consciousness, or an appreciation of beauty and logical order, or most of all the ability to enter into a spiritual relationship with Himself. In that respect, we are like our Creator. But what strikes me the most is in Genesis 5:1-3 which says – “This is the book of the genealogy of Adam. In the day that God created man, He made him in the likeness of God. He created them male and female, and blessed them and called them Mankind in the day they were created. And Adam lived one hundred and thirty years, and begot a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth.
The same thing that is said of God in relation to Adam was said of Adam in relation to his son Seth. So, in order words since we are created in God’s image we are His children and we share His likeness just as a child shares the likeness of his or her father.
Now, since we are the children of God we now also have the power, privilege and right of a child.
- The power of the child is the surety that the father will listen to him.
- The privilege of the child is that he can ask anything he wants from his father without shame or second thought.
- The right of a child is inheritance, to receive all that which belongs to the father.
Let us rest in this knowledge and assurance of God being our Father and because He is our Father we can be sure that our life is safe in His hands.
