Ecclesiastes 4:9 – “Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labour.”
Who wouldn’t love to have a true and trustworthy friend whom they can rely on? A genuine friend loves, openly corrects, and guides his fellow mate in the right direction. Just as iron sharpens iron, so one sharpens another (Prov. 27:17). A wise friend can properly direct his friend in making good choices. They are willing to give their time, effort, or any help needed sacrificially. A true friend sticks to you closer than your brother (Prov. 18:24).
The Bible explains the friendship shared between David and Jonathan. Jonathan made a covenant with David as he loved him as his own soul (1 Sam. 18:3). Jonathan sacrificially offered his armour, sword, bow, and belt to David. Jonathan offered protection to David from his jealous father Saul. Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labour. If either one falls down, one can help the other (Prov. 4:9-10). David promised to show his loving kindness to Jonathan’s family even after his death as per their promise (1 Sam. 20: 15-24). David kept his word by showing his kindness to Mephibosheth, Jonathan’s crippled son. Mephibosheth was allowed to eat at King David’s table always and his grandfather Saul’s land was restored to him (2 Sam. 9:7).
Jesus addressed his disciples as friends (John 15:15). He was only hours from laying down His life and asked them to exhibit their friendship by keeping His commands (John 15:13-14). Jesus is our true friend, who understands us. He has promised you that He would never leave you nor forsake you. If you do not have any trustworthy friend, you can always approach Jesus. He is always willing to listen to you and be your friend.
