Psalms 23:1 “The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.”(ESV)
David calls the Lord Shepherd. Being a shepherd he very well knows what it means to be a shepherd. That’s why he addresses God as his Shepherd.
- Shepherd feeds his sheep: he always leads to good pastures where he feeds his sheep.
- Shepherd protects his sheep: he always carries a rod and staff with him. The rod is to protect sheep from wild animals. And the staff is to bring correction to sheep when they go astray. Both of them help protect the sheep from life dangers.
- Shepherd cures his sheep: as sheep walk through valleys, forests and narrow places, they sometimes get wounds. Shepherd takes such sheep into his lap and binds all the wounds. If they are not able to walk, he carries them on his shoulders.
This exactly applies to us. What a wonderful God we have. He does everything out of love. He is more than any earthly shepherd. He gave his precious life for us, sheep. If we want to be fed, protected and cured, we have to follow our shepherd and obey him. Let us be good sheep in his fold. Amen!
