1 SAMUEL 17:40 “Then he took his staff in his hand; and he chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag, in a pouch which he had, and his sling was in his hand. And he drew near to the Philistine.” (NKJV)
1 SAMUEL 17:49,50 “Then David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone; and he slung it and struck the Philistine in his forehead, so that the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the earth. So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. But there was no sword in the hand of David.” (NKJV)
More than just believing that God would help him defeat Goliath, David actually had absolute faith in God. Faith means more than just believing something to be true in our head, but to act as though it is true. Goliath didn’t just fall dead because David believed it could happen. God could have struck him dead instantly when he was taunting the army of Israel, but God required David to step out in faith by facing Goliath in battle, and trusting in God to bring down the giant. David had to gather those five smooth stones and swing his sling before God worked a miracle.
God doesn’t always just snap his fingers to make something happen just because we believe God can. It requires an act of faith on our part, stepping out in faith, believing “the battle belongs to the Lord,” it’s not just ours to fight. It is not by your own abilities you will succeed in overcoming the giants in your life, it is by the strength of the Lord. If we step out in faith there is nothing that God cannot through us.
