JUDGES 6:27 “So Gideon took ten of his servants and did as the Lord told him. But because he was afraid of his family and the townspeople, he did it at night rather than in the daytime.” (NIV)
JUDGES 7:2-7 “The Lord said to Gideon, “You have too many men. I cannot deliver Midian into their hands, or Israel would boast against me, ‘My own strength has saved me.’ Now announce to the army, ‘Anyone who trembles with fear may turn back and leave Mount Gilead.’” So twenty-two thousand men left, while ten thousand remained. But the Lord said to Gideon, “There are still too many men. Take them down to the water, and I will thin them out for you there. If I say, ‘This one shall go with you,’ he shall go; but if I say, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ he shall not go.” So Gideon took the men down to the water. There the Lord told him, “Separate those who lap the water with their tongues as a dog laps from those who kneel down to drink.” Three hundred of them drank from cupped hands, lapping like dogs. All the rest got down on their knees to drink. The Lord said to Gideon, “With the three hundred men that lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hands. Let all the others go home.” (NIV)
Here we see yet another ridiculous plan of God to defeat a 135,000 strong army with a mere 300 people. It might remind us of the movie 300! But, unlike the movie 300 the Bible doesn’t mention even a single Israelite casualty. It was a complete and decisive victory for Gideon and his forces.
We might never understand God’s plans but we can be absolutely sure that His plans will work. We should not be carried away by our circumstances, believe that God can work in marvellous ways and nothing is impossible for God. The battle is the Lord’s and the victory is ours but He gives us the victory.
We just have to do what God asks us to do and take the step of faith. Gideon took the step of faith when the Lord asked Gideon to tear down the altar of Baal and the image of Asherah, he gathered around 10 men to do the task. Though he considered himself incapable to lead Israel into battle, he never said “I can’t do it”, “nobody will listen to me”, “I can’t gather a single person”…etc. Gideon took the step of faith and gathered 10 men and later 32,000 men rallied behind and then the entire nation of Israel wanted to crown him king over them (Judg. 8:22).
When we take the step of faith God will work the miracle.
