Colossians 3:1-2 – “If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.”
There are some people who profess to be Christians, but their personal lives deny the doctrines they profess to love and defend, especially when it comes to forgiveness. The truth is found in Romans 6:8 which says, “if we have died with Christ, we also live with Him.” According to Romans 6:4, we must walk in newness of life in Christ by stripping off the old self with its practices and motives and become clothed anew in Christ. When we live in Christ, we will approach daily life with patience, kindness, forgiveness, and by being good to others. As Scripture says, “whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is fair, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things” (Phil. 4:8). Keep on doing them as they are from above. We must put to death anger, rage, wrath, malice, politics, and slander.
Jesus brings new life to disciples who die to the world. We must die to our old way of life and live in the Lord’s new life. We die to carnal living and come alive to Spirit-filled living. It is easy to love the earthly luxuries than focussing on heaven. The Bible says, “The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil…” (1 Tim. 6:10). We die to earthly affections and enthusiastically embrace heavenly affections. “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him” (1 John 2:15). It means that we are not to be worldly in nature. Jesus said, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matt. 6:19-21).
Rejoice in the Lord always. Let your gentleness and kindness be known to everyone. Live on earth as a preparation for heaven. Focus on the heavenly abode that Jesus has prepared for us, where always there is joy and peace. Where is your mind focussed? Heaven or earth?
