JOSHUA 6: 2-5 But the Lord said to Joshua, “I have given you Jericho, its king, and all its strong warriors. You and your fighting men should march around the town once a day for six days. Seven priests will walk ahead of the Ark, each carrying a ram’s horn. On the seventh day you are to march around the town seven times, with the priests blowing the horns. When you hear the priests give one long blast on the rams’ horns, have all the people shout as loud as they can. Then the walls of the town will collapse, and the people can charge straight into the town.” (NLT)
JOSHUA 6: 20 “When the people heard the sound of the rams’ horns, they shouted as loud as they could. Suddenly, the walls of Jericho collapsed, and the Israelites charged straight into the town and captured it.” (NLT)
The city of Jericho was a highly fortified city with huge walls; some historians say that it was surrounded by 2 massive stone walls. The outer wall was 6 feet thick and 20 feet high. The inner wall was 12 feet thick and 30 feet high. There was a 15 feet guarded walkway between these two walls. Hence, from a military standpoint, it was practically impenetrable.
But, here in these verses we see the strategy of God to bring down the seemingly impenetrable walls of Jericho. What was the strategy? Priests and soldiers marching around the wall seven times armed with nothing but ram’s horns, the Ark of the Covenant and their voices! From a military point of view or even to any common man this would seem to be the most ridiculous military strategy ever, but, Joshua and the people of Israel choose to trust in God’s plans and undoubtedly the seemingly ridiculous strategy bore extremely effective results.
This historical event should remind us that nothing is impossible with God and God can work in impossible situations through impossible means to deliver exciting results. God’s ways and plans are higher than ours, we might not understand it but we can be assured about its success.
Joshua and the people of Israel didn’t try to bring out the walls of Jericho but rather choose to trust in the Lord to bring it down. Similarly, we might be facing huge impenetrable walls in our life, we need to realise that the only way to bring down those walls is for us to stop trying and start trusting in God to bring it down.
Christianity today has become a religion of people who are trying to live a Christian life, trying to please God, trying to scale, penetrate and bring down the huge walls in front of us. Each time we try, we fail. Now it’s time to stop trying and stop failing! Just start trusting! Realize that it is not us who brings down the walls but it is Christ who does it. So, let Him do His work while ours is to simply trust Him to bring down the walls. No matter how ridiculous His plans might seem to us, it will always produce effective results.
