JOSHUA 6: 2-5 But the Lord said to Joshua, “I have given you Jericho, its king, and all its strong warriors. You and your fighting men should march around the town once a day for six days. Seven priests will walk ahead of the Ark, each carrying a ram’s horn. On the seventh day you are to march around the town seven times, with the priests blowing the horns. When you hear the priests give one long blast on the rams’ horns, have all the people shout as loud as they can. Then the walls of the town will collapse, and the people can charge straight into the town.” (NLT)
The city of Jericho was a highly fortified city with huge walls; some historians say that it was surrounded by 2 massive stone walls. The outer wall was 6 feet thick and 20 feet high. The inner wall was 12 feet thick and 30 feet high. There was a 15 feet guarded walkway between these two walls. Hence, from a military standpoint, it was practically impenetrable.
To bring down these impenetrable walls all what the Israelites had to do was submission to the authority of God and obedience to what He asked them to do. Let’s look at the elements God used to bring down the walls, notice that He didn’t ask them to use bombs, siege towers or heavy weaponry, what He asked them to use to bring down the walls were :
- 7 priests
- 7 ram horn trumpets
- Ark of the Covenant
We too face insurmountable walls in our life, strongholds over which we have no control and those which we have no power to bring down. To bring down such strongholds we too should employ the same elements which God commanded the Israelites to employ to bring down the walls of Jericho.
The number 7 stands for perfection, completeness or fullness. Priests are mediators between God and man; they are man’s advocates before God. Now, we have the perfect advocate and mediator in Jesus. Now, we don’t need 7 priests to bring down our strongholds but just the one perfect advocate and mediator, Jesus Christ.
Ram stands for substitutionary atonement, when Abraham was about to sacrifice his son Isaac, God prevented him from doing so and provided a ram as a substitute in Isaac’s place. Now, we have the perfect substitutionary atonement in Jesus. Now, we don’t need 7 ram horn trumpets to bring down our strongholds but the one perfect substitutionary atonement, Jesus Christ.
The Ark of the Covenant represents the presence of God. Jesus is God Himself, so, if Jesus is with us, the presence of God Himself is with us. Now, we don’t have to carry the Ark of the Covenant around to bring down the strongholds of our life but the presence of God as revealed in Jesus Himself is enough.
So, all what we need to bring down the strongholds of our life is Jesus Himself. If Jesus is at the center of our lives there will be not stronghold that we can’t bring down.
