Read: John 6:26-33
Man needs food for his sustenance and physical nourishment. Likewise, we need God’s Word as spiritual food for our daily walk with God. Jesus is the bread of life. If you come to Him, you will never hunger. Jesus said, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst” (John 6:33). People are labouring for the food that perishes, but they have neither time nor mind to seek after the life-giving bread – Jesus. After Jesus performed the miracle of feeding 5000 men with 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish, a great crowd started following Him expecting to get free food all the time. When Jesus’ teachings were hard for them to follow, a larger number of His disciples left Him (John 6:66).
God provided manna, the food of angels (Ps. 78:25) to the Israelites for 40 years. They did not have to worry about food at all, as they were travelling through the wilderness for 40 years. Jesus said to the Jews, “Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world” (John 6:48-51).
We need Jesus every day, just like we need food for survival. We need to feed on His Word diligently and dwell on His promises. Jesus said, “Do not labour for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him” (John 6:27). Let us labour for that “Bread of Life” to live forever with Him (John 6:51).
