1 SAMUEL 17:37-40 “And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!” So Saul clothed David with his armor, and he put a bronze helmet on his head; he also clothed him with a coat of mail. David fastened his sword to his armor and tried to walk, for he had not tested them. And David said to Saul, “I cannot walk with these, for I have not tested them.” So David took them off. Then he took his staff in his hand; and he chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag, in a pouch which he had, and his sling was in his hand. And he drew near to the Philistine.” (NKJV)
Finally David was able to persuade Saul into permitting him to fight Goliath. Saul also proceeded to put his armour on David, but it didn’t fit David, he couldn’t move with it. Even though Saul had successfully used his armour successfully in the past, it wasn’t how God had given David success in the past over the lion and the bear. How someone else has dealt with their problems isn’t necessarily your solution. Each person is unique, and God has given us different talents, and abilities. If David had gone out to face Goliath in Saul’s armour and weapons he would have got killed. Instead he wisely chose to take the weapons he already used as a shepherd, his staff and sling. These weapons were tried and true, they had helped him defeat enemies in the past, and they would help him bring success against the giant.
Most of the time the reason why we fail to succeed or don’t see the desired results in our undertakings are because we try to emulate another person’s success formula. We try to become like another person who is successful. We make the mistake of assuming that what worked for somebody else will work for us too. It is good to learn from the lives of great people but we also need to understand what worked for them might not work for us. Don’t try to copy somebody else, remember you are unique and one of a kind, God has created each of us uniquely and put in us all what we need to achieve the plans of God in our lives. You don’t have to be like someone else to achieve success, you just have to be yourself and believe in God to bring about the success through the tools which He has already given you.
