HEBREWS 8:12 “For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more.” (ESV)
I often hear an interesting statement which most people say – “I will forgive you but will never forget what you have done”. This statement has always perplexed me, how can there be forgiveness without forgetting totally what one has done? Forgiving but not forgetting is no forgiveness at all, when God forgave us of our sins He also completely forgot about it, we were washed as white as snow and it was as if the slate was rubbed clean and made new again.
Forgiving and not forgetting is the world’s standard of forgiveness. The world is not our standard, Jesus is. Forgiveness without forgetting is a recipe for disaster; it sows seeds of bitterness and mistrust. Today, if there is someone who has hurt you and you choose to forgive that person, I want to encourage you to also forget all what he/she has done against you because that is the kind of forgiveness God gave us.
