Read: Psalm 34:1-8
Different situations in life can produce discouragement, but the thing to remember is that Satan is the one who instigates discouragement. He will do his best in trying to discourage us and make us focus on failures and negative things instead of on God.
Satan sometimes discourages us by giving us the idea that we can’t please God enough. We may think that we need to read the Bible more, pray more, spend time with God more, give more, witness more and so on. We can reasonably do those things, but if we think that we need to do all those without any failures, then we may fall into the devil’s trap. What pleases the Lord is our obedience to Him in our daily walk, and not a prescribed set of duties.
We may get discouraged because of unanswered prayer. The Lord may not answer our prayers according to our liking and timing. When we allow ourselves to be discouraged when the Lord deals with us in such situations, it can threaten even our prayer life.
What we ought to do in times of possible discouragement is focus on the Lord all the more. When you pray to God in such times, thank Him for being with you in this time of discouragement. Admit that He is in total control of your life no matter what. And acknowledge that He is ultimately carrying out His best for your life. Ask Him to encourage you from within by His Holy Spirit, since the Holy Spirit alone is the One who encourages a believer from within.
