1 Peter 2:9-10 – You are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, … His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvellous light; who once were not a people, but are now the people of God…
In the Old covenant period, only the Jews were relatively regarded as the people of God. They alone had the privilege of having the unique relationship with God. The Gentiles were mostly distanced from God and having a fellowship with Him. But in the New covenant, through Jesus Christ, the Gentiles are accepted into the family of God. Though they were not a people of God, they are now the people of God, having also inherited all the blessings which God originally gave to Israel.
The priesthood in the Old covenant times was exclusively reserved to the priestly families alone. No one else was authorised to do any priestly activity in the temple. But now in the New covenant, everyone who is born-again through Jesus Christ is regarded as a priest unto God. What a unique privilege! Do you realise who you are in Christ? If you do, your duty is to proclaim His praises, and to offer up spiritual sacrifices to God (1 Pet. 2:5, 9). You are called to minister in the presence of God. All your life is priestly service. You are never out of God’s presence. You are never in a neutral zone.
You can do it in church services with preaching and singing and praying and reading. You can do it in your small groups as you tell each other what God has been for you. You can do it at work as you tell people what you love about God and why you think He is great. You can do it in a thousand different ways of love that suit your situation and personality. Always remember that your full-time destiny as a royal priest is to make the glories of the King known.
